"morally wrong to have so many American uninsured" and proposes that Medicaid coverage should be expanded and that "health markets" should be created that will be capable of covering the
uninsured (2008 Presidential Candidate, 2007). Another issue that means a lot to the public is global warming and protecting the environment. Rather than continue to have the government
bend to the wishes of the influential oil lobby, in October of 2007, Edwards proposed investigating the oil companies and called for conservation (2008 Presidential Candidate, 2007). On a connected
issue, he regards the fact that New Orleans is still a disaster area, particularly in the Ninth Ward, to be a disgrace that should shame the country. Walsh (2007),
reporting for the U.S. News & World Report, commented in February that Edwards was no long the "centrist," who carefully refrained from attacking his political opponents in the 2004 campaign.
He has taken a "sharp-edged antiwar stand," that has a sense of greater urgency and emotionality than the position of either Clinton or Obama (Walsh, 2007). Also in February, Edwards
called for Congress to use it control of financing to stop escalation of the war effort in Iraq (Walsh, 2007). At that time, Edwards felt that withdrawing US troops would
