Although this hardly seems amusing, Vonneguts strong sense of irony and appreciation of the absurd make the novel very funny. This paper answers several questions about the novel. In particular, it argues that technological advancement without a corresponding advancement in ethics is disastrous. It further discusses Bokononism, the significance of the books title, and Vonneguts satire on the treatment of third-world countries by more developed nations. Discussion Science without ethics: Science without ethics can end in the destruction of the world, which is precisely what happens here. The embodiment of the scientist who loves research beyond all else is found in Dr. Felix Hoenikker, "one of the so-called Fathers of the first atomic bomb" (Vonnegut 6). Hoenikker is one of those head-in-the-clouds people who is entirely out of touch with reality. He becomes fascinated with minutiae, or with something so ordinary that other people miss it. For instance, one morning when its freezing outside and the car wont start, he just sits there, thinking about turtles, and whether their spines buckle or contract when they pull their heads in (Vonnegut 15). He is so entirely wrapped up in himself that he is easily distracted and sees no real reason why he shouldnt go off and do as he pleases. His self-absorption is so complete that he doesnt have the slightest idea how to raise children, or what his children are turning out to be. In any case, he raises selfish, greedy misfits who are as out of step with the rest of the world as he is: as he embodies the scientist who cares only about the process, they embody the consumers ...
