of a Kurt Vonnegut novel is like trying to make sense of a tornado, hurricane or other natural disaster. One can sort of get a sense of whats happening, but
explaining why is something else entirely. This paper argues that Vonneguts Biography Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., "was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1922," and his "distinctive worldview" was shaped by
the "era of his birth" as well as his birthplace (Priest). The Midwest between the two world wars was a "middle-class world that embraced the values of honesty, decency and
human dignity," and this, to Vonnegut, was the way things were supposed to be (Priest). This ideal world had not experienced war, and it remained "untouched by technology" (Priest). Vonneguts
apparently happy childhood didnt last, however, and his life was touched by both personal and national tragedies: his mother committed suicide on Mothers Day; his sister and brother-in-law died; he
was a POW in WWII and went through the firebombing of Dresden (an experience that plays out in his books repeatedly) (Priest). With all Americans of a certain age, he
went through the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King; the Vietnam War; his brothers death and a divorce (Priest). The result of this tumult is
