it was written. Like literature today essentially portrays our society and government in many ways, so did literature from the past. The following paper examines society, government and the military
of early modern Europe as presented in Voltaires 18th century novel "Candide." Candide In the beginning of the novel we see how Candide is a young child and
an illegitimate child who is being raised by his uncle, a baron. He is taught by "Pangloss, the preceptor" who "was the oracle of the family, and little Candide listened
to his instructions with all the simplicity natural to his age and disposition" (Voltaire Chapter 1). In this the reader can understand that it is likely most notoriously influential individuals
would not take in an illegitimate child, and yet the baron did so and educated him, the educator apparently being a man who was wise, with visions, something quite unlike
our society today. Candide falls in love with the barons daughter and is kicked out of the house and found himself essentially kidnapped and put in the army. This
indicates that the society did not look kindly on promiscuous behavior in polite society. Such an act would put people quickly on the outskirts of society for men and women
of good breeding behaved appropriately. However, women who were generally caught up in such behavior could quickly find themselves as prostitutes as women had little choice in society. If they
were not proper and did not marry well they did not have hope to be employed in many areas. They would normally become servants or prostitutes. In the case of
the woman that Candide loves, the one he fell in love with and thus was kicked out of the castle, her journeys speak of such things as she is ultimately
