deadly. This paper discusses volcanoes, what causes volcanic eruptions and the effects of such eruptions. Causes of Eruptions Volcanic eruptions actually change the surface of the earth; in
some cases, such as Hawaii, they create new land. Interestingly, there are different types of eruptions: when a volcano erupts "quietly"-the lava flows gently without a major explosion-the
volcano is referred to as a "shield volcano" (Kwiatkowski and McLaughlin). Mt. Kilauea in Hawaii is a shield volcano (Kwiatkowski and McLaughlin). A volcano that erupts "lava one time
and bursts of ash, gas and steam at other times" is called a "stratovolcano," also known as a "composite volcano" (Kwiatkowski and McLaughlin). Such a volcano may also erupt
a rapidly moving cloud of "ash, gas and steam" known as a "pyroclastic cloud" (Kwiatkowski and McLaughlin). Mount St. Helens is a stratovolcano. A volcano that erupts cinders "around
a single vent" is called a "cinder cone" (Kwiatkowski and McLaughlin). Cinder cones may occur on the flanks of other types of volcanoes; Paricutin in Mexico is a cinder
cone (Kwiatkowski and McLaughlin). Volcanoes can also be classified in terms of activity: active volcanoes erupt frequently; dormant volcanoes are unlikely to erupt; and extinct volcanoes are "never likely to
erupt again" (Different Types of Volcano). To understand an eruption we have to understand the inside of a volcano. A volcano sits over what is called a "magma
chamber" inside the earth; it is connected to the magma chamber by a "vent" (What Happens inside a Volcano). (Magma is molten rock; when it rises to the surface its
called lava.) There may be secondary vents as well, but there is always one main channel (What Happens inside a Volcano). A volcano erupts "when pressure in the magma chamber
