lives within the forests each have their own means of communication, and each uses communication in much the same way that humans do. Vocal communication is therefore an important
aspect of wildlife in that it allows the different species to relay information that is both social as well as necessary for survival.
For instance, consider the case of the Drill baboons and the Mona monkeys, both of whom live together in the same habitat (Stephens, 2004). Monas are found
primarily in West Africa, with the majority of this population in Nigeria (Stephens, 2004). They are primarily tree dwellers and can be found at all tree elevations (Stephens, 2004).
These are typically small monkeys, rarely weighing more than 10 pounds (Stephens, 2004). They are masked as well (Stephens, 2004).
Early in the morning, it is typical for the male Mona to bark in order to assemble his troop (Stephens, 2004). Clearly, this vocal communication is one of
much importance, as the other monkeys realize that they need to assemble quickly and do so (Stephens, 2004). In the case of present danger, the bark will become loud
and shrill, altering all who can hear it of the threat that is imminent (Stephens, 2004). Again, because of their ability to communicate vocally, these monkeys are able to
relay key information that is necessary for their survival as well as for social functions (Stephens, 2004). When these monkeys forage
for food, there are more calm and relaxed vocalizations that can be heard between members of the group (Stephens, 2004). In this way, its similar to carrying on an
