Romanian word, "Drac", which can mean either dragon or devil. (Magill 1995) Little is actually known about Vlad IIIs childhood. We know He had two brothers, Mircea and
Radu, and his early education came from his mother, and later education came after his father had reclaimed the throne and killed Alexandru. He was then schooled in the typical
fashion of the era, and taught the skills that were believed necessary for a Christian knight, including personal combat, warfare, and battle tactics. (Prince 1997) Even after Vlad II returned
to the throne, the situation in Wallachia remained unstable. The Ottoman Empire was rapidly gaining in strength and Byzantium continued to collapse. The Turkish empire swept over Byzantine territories, which
had previously acted as a buffer between Europe and the increasingly powerful Muslim armies, and the province of Walachia slipped in and out of Turkish rule, and also in and
out of the hands of Vlad the III. (Vlad 1996) Vlad III eventually did manage to regain the thrown of Walachia by conspiring with the same man who earlier
had killed his father. This was the start of Vlad IIIs longest period on the throne; 1456 to 1462. He made the city of Trigoviste his capital, and he
had a castle built in the mountains near the Arges River. (Magill 1995) During this time he launched his own war against the Turks, and he was seemingly somewhat successful
