be instilled in the classroom setting. Reading, however, is hardly an osmotic process! It is one which, as difficult as it may be for some to accept, requires
a methodical instructional approach. While children are innately equipped to discern and use sound, i.e. to hear and speak as a means of communication, reading is an acquired skill.
Children learned to speak, after all, well before written language was devised. Reading, in contrast, is a relatively new evolutionary development. Speech is an innate capability, reading is
not. The two diverge as well in terms of the cognitive processes which are at play. When optimal, instructional methodology utilized in the development of reading skills takes
advantage of that fact. Instructional methodology typically includes rote memorization and drill. Another technique, however, emphasizes visualization. By encouraging visualization teachers enhance the reading experience.
Visualization occurs in a diversity of reading situations. Wordless picture books, perhaps, offer the most obvious example of visualization. Visualization also occurs even with
just plain text, however. Vividly written text results in vivid visualization. Text that makes a demonstration or shows the reader something is another obvious example of visualization.
Even plain nonfiction text, however, can result in visualization. Learning is accelerated and deepened with visualization.
Review of the Literature The professional literature emphasizes the importance of visualization in the educational process. Visualization can
be valuable in a diversity of learning situations. Manifold (2007), for example, relates the value of curriculum that inspires visualization for students going through the grieving process.
