(2007) defines a hearing impairment as "any alteration of hearing capacity." There are many different degrees of hearing impairments that range from mild to total deafness. For example, a person
may not be able to hear sounds that are of a specific pitch and that loss may be only in one ear (Science and Technology Encyclopedia, 2007). When a hearing
loss exists in just one ear, it is referred to as a unilateral loss, if the loss affects both ears, it is a bilateral loss (Science and Technology Encyclopedia, 2007).
Polsdorfer (2007) explains that "sound travels through a medium like air or water as waves of compression and rarefaction. These waves are collected by the external ear and cause the
tympanic membrane (ear drum) to vibrate." Through another series of steps, sound goes to the brain and it is at that point the individual makes sense of the sound (Polsdorfer,
2007). Infants may be born with a hearing loss or deafness or the person could lose the ability to hear at a later time as the result of illness,
accidents and even age (Science and Technology Encyclopedia, 2007). Even a mild hearing impairment can have a dramatic impact on an individuals ability to learn, and, in fact, to progress
through the developmental processes if that loss is acquired at birth or during childhood. Children born deaf have no frame of reference of spoken language and it is through language

[is] visual acuity less than 20/60." In the United States, blindness is defined as "visual acuity worse than 20/400" (Science and Technology Encyclopedia, 2007). From a medical point of view,
