for my older brothers. At the Lincoln Memorial, I remember looking up at the kindly, benevolent, lined face of Abraham Lincoln and having the urge to want to climb up
in his lap. He looked like a nice man who could use a cuddle from a small child. Naturally, my reactions to D.C. as an adult are considerably more nuanced,
but I still experience a feeling of affinity towards Lincoln every time I visit Washington, as he is a man who exemplifies so much of what it is best in
the American character. As an adult, with children of my own, I wanted to see the nations capital-as my parents were right-it is a good educational experience. In additional
to the various memorials, the Capitol building, the White House, etc., the fabulous resources of the Smithsonian provide insight into American history and the context of our national journey. My
boys were only mildly interested in the history museums, but came alive when we visited the Air and Space Museum. It is fascinating to see the enormity of the
engines that drove a Saturn rocket to the moon and compare this to the miniscule size of the first Mercury capsule. My boys were fascinated by the technology but I
felt a sense of awe at the bravery of the men who climbed into that flimsy-looking structure atop a rocket that was very similar to those that had exploded on
ignition rather than zooming into the sky. Similarly, I felt awe looking at older vehicles, such as the first Wright Brothers plane and the plane in which Charles Lindbergh first
