to visit the India Gate (also known as the All India War Memorial) which is a magnificent arch that was commemorates the loss of 90,000 Indian soldiers who died fighting
World War I ("India Gate"). Standing 42 meters tall, the arch of the India Gate is mounted in stages and culminates in a beautiful cornice, underneath which are inscribed Imperial
suns ("India Gate"). The Gate is surrounded by a fountains, which are beautifully lit at night ("India Gate"). While in New Delhi, we also visited the Rashtrapati Bhavan or
Presidential Palace. This is a huge mansion that provides the residence for the President of India, which is the largest democracy in the world and, fittingly, this palace constitutes the
largest residence in the world for the president of a republic ("Rashtrapati"). It was built during the colonial period to be the home of the British Viceroy.
The Rashtrapati Bhavans beautiful architecture was designed by architect Edwin L. Lutyens and the palace was intended to serve as a symbol of the permanence
of British rule over India. The Presidential Palace took seventeen years to complete and Lutyens embodied many of the classic elements of Indian architecture in its design ("Rashtrapati"). Another cultural
site that was visited while in New Delhi was Humayuns Tomb, which dates from the late sixteenth century. Humayun, son of the first Mughal Emperor Babur, ruled India for a
decade, was expelled and regained Delhi in 1555, just a year before his death. Humayuns wife supervised construction of his tomb, which occurred from 1562-1572 (Waugh). This writer/tutor could not
