The National Center for the Preservation of Democracy is a center for education that calls attention to the necessity and benefits of living in a democratic
republic. The purpose of the organization is to educate individuals - primarily students - in the benefits of democracy. The Center seeks to raise awareness in all areas,
but particularly in those of diversity and commitment. The larger goal is to encourage critical thinking and active participation in democratic processes including not only voting, but in being
aware of current events and holding elected officials accountable in their role as representing the people who have elected them to office. Basic Premises
The National Center offers a variety of "programs that challenge students to collaborate, think critically, and participate actively in discussion, debate, and civic action" (Student Programs). These programs
and the focus of the organization are based on three primary premises: * "We, the people, shape democracy; * "I, too, can shape democracy; and * "Those who have struggled
for freedom and equality have extended democracys reach for all" (Student Programs). All of these premises can be seen articulated in one of
