a counselor at the center on May 2, 2005. Janet has worked at the center for three years. The following information is based on this interview. The student visited Lauras
House, a domestic violence shelter in South Orange County. Lauras House is the only comprehensive shelter in this county. It was founded in 1994 and serves 16 communities with an
aggregate population in excess of 530,000. Lauras House is also one of only four comprehensive shelters in Orange County that meets all 13 state requirements. The shelters mission is to
reduce the incidence of domestic and family violence by providing a safe shelter for women and children and providing the support, education and contacts these women need to begin a
new life without violence. The shelters guiding principals are printed and displayed prominently in the shelter: "To reduce the incidence, recidivism and intergenerational cycle of domestic violence through education, counseling,
support, case management and life skills training for victims of all ages." Janet explained the shelter provides many different services within five major programs: 1. Emergency shelter, support and
case management for between 18 and 22 women and children. Shelter is offered for 30 to 45 days. 2. Counseling and resource center services, which includes individual and group counseling,
life skills education, information about domestic violence. 3. When the women leave, they may join the StepAhead program that has a duration of 60 - 90 days and is limited
to 8 to 11 women and children. 4. The Childrens Learning Center offers preschool, after-school programs and drop-in childcare services. 5. CHOICES Institute, which is a court mandated batterers intervention
