authors works deal strongly with the character of Haitian society and the impact which it has upon the people who live there. Nearly all of her main characters are either
emigrants or the children of emigrants, who struggle with the effort to reconcile their individual identity with both the traditional culture of their Haitian homeland and the new values of
their adopted American homeland. As such, all of the works deal in themes of how national culture affects personal identity, in both direct and indirect ways. To the authors credit,
however, she portrays the complexity of Haitian culture quite deftly; even when relating facts about the culture that are horrifying to a Western audience, she nevertheless tempers these facts with
observations of the warmth and humanism that still persist in Haiti, in spite of the savage sociopolitical landscape. This complex characterization means that one who reads her novels will have
a difficult time pinpointing any one facet of Haitian culture as being the dominant facet, but this is likely a more true and realistic perspective to hold. This paper will
explore the visions of Haiti that are projected by three of Dandicats novels: "Breath, Eyes, Memory", "Brother, Im Dying", and "The Dew Breaker". This paragraph helps the student begin
to explore the themes that dominate Danticats first novel, "Breath, Eyes, Memory". In "Breath, Eyes, Memory", Danticat tells the story of a young Haitian women, Sophie, who has been raised
in Haiti by her aunt Atie, but at the age of twelve is summoned to the United States by her mother, who traveled there many years before and has been
