with the Ruwenzori Mountains National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park, which are part of Uganda (Riley and Riley, 2005). This area has suffered due to the civil strife that
has characterized much of Africa. Diversity of life forms There is incredible diversity among the life forms that inhabit Virunga, due to the variety of its habitats, which range
from "marshy deltas to savannahs, lava plains, and [the] snowfields of the Ruwenzori Mountains" (Riley and Riley, 2005, p. 62). Also contained with the park are Africas two most active
volcanoes ("Virunga National Park," 2011). Some of the largest wild animal concentrations recorded in Africa have been observed within this 3,160 square mile (8,184 square kilometers) reserve. The savannah
region is inhabited by "African elephants, hippos, buffalo, a range of antelopes including kobs, Defassas waterbucks, topi, warthogs [and] lions" (Riley and Riley, 2005, p. 62). In the Semiliki
Valley and on the slopes of the Virungas, "mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and okapi have been observed and the extreme north is inhabited by "forest hogs and bongos" (Riley and Riley,
2005, p. 62). Virunga also abounds with bird species, such as the "shoebill storks, elegant crowned cranes, Goliath herons, and martial eagles," as well as the "rare papyrus yellow warblers"
