in a very narrow sense, usually taken to mean that a person is virtuous (good); or that a woman has not yet had sexual relations. But in classical times, virtue had a much deeper, more comprehensive meaning. For the Greeks, virtue encompassed such ideals as civic duty and putting the good of the community beyond that of the individual. "Beginning with classical philosophy antedating Aristotle, virtue was a specific concept, defined precisely as the willingness of individuals and social groups to sacrifice their particular self-interest to the welfare and stability of the larger community; to serve the greater good and forgo power and riches of a personal or parochial nature" (Weiser). In Antigone, the action turns on the fact that Creon, King of Thebes, will not allow the body of Polyneices to be decently buried; instead, he has ordered it to lie out where jackals and other scavengers will find it (Sophocles). Antigone, Creons foster-daughter and Polyneices sister, creeps out of the city at night and sprinkles dirt on the body, completing the rite of burial (Sophocles). This was no trivial matter to the Greeks. As evidenced by many works, in particular The Odyssey, great care had to be taken with the body in order to insure passage to the underworld. The Underworld in this mythology was not a particularly happy place; it was a gloomy cave where spirits wandered forever, gradually forgetting their earthly lives. Still, it was important that the rites be obeyed, as they were sacred to the gods, and the gods at that time were present in human affairs. By ordering the corpse to remain unburied, Creon is violating the laws of the immortals.
