can be taken on the question. A bioethicist, for example, would be concerned primarily with the empirical and rational issues, and would not be starting from the premise of, for
instance, a particular religious paradigm. Any objections to a particular practice on religious grounds would not be discounted per se, but would be perceived in the light of their pragmatic
merits rather than as absolute truths from the perspective of the belief system.
There are a variety of other perspectives which might be taken: a Kantian, for instance, would assert that as Kant states in his Groundwork to the Metaphysics of Morals
(1964) that one should never treat other human beings as a means to an end, but as an end in themselves. In other words, it is not acceptable to use
human beings for a particular purpose: one must instead value them for their intrinsic worth, rather than for their usefulness. However, as Schuklenk (2002) points out, defining individuals in terms
of their absolute worth is impossible, since worth itself can only be assessed in comparative terms rather than as an absolute. It is therefore not really possible to regard the
Kantian ethical system as an impartial viewpoint: however, when one considers virtue ethics, it is evident that these come from even more specific paradigms or worldviews.
