is not arbitrary. It is not that everyone just does what they believe is morally correct or what society dictates, but it draws on something special that comes from deep
within. It is assumed that the wisdom to emanate from ones inner life is real. Along those lines, one might conclude that there exists an objective, intrinsic morality. This is
the point that has been relayed by Veatch (1966) based on Aristotles concepts. Aristotle did explore issues like virtue but so have many other philosophers such as Confucius. In fact,
Confucius wrote a great deal about virtue, but he referred to it a bit differently. Confucius (2001) writes: "Well, is not putting duty first, and success second, a way of
raising the standard of virtue? And is not attacking the evil in oneself, and not the evil which is in others, a way of reforming dissolute habits?" (p.124). For Confucius,
the idea of virtue was relevant and it would include things like loyalty. For Confucius however, loyalty is not something that should be based on coercion (Shun, 2004). It
is not something that can be forced. Virtue and related concepts for this philosopher should be based on an intrinsic yearning. Both Confucius and Aristotle are philosophers who discuss
virtue. Yet, Yu (1998) claims that when it comes to virtue, neither Aristotle or Confucius had been highly regarded in this domain historically. In the West, Aristotles ideals have been
disregarded since the Enlightenment (Yu, 1998). In the East, the ideas of Confucius seem to be a synthesis of ren as returning to li, and ren as love, but this
is severed later as Confucianism changes (Yu, 1998). Ren is something that has been interpreted as a synonym for virtue (Yu, 1998). While both philosophers do discuss virtue, the concept
