week is utilizing a virtual team to some extent. Many corporations have made use of some form of virtual teams for quite awhile. Even Scott Adams character, Dilbert, has been
promoting virtual team concepts, although Dilberts employer doesnt quite have a complete grasp of the concept, which brings us to some of the potential problems and pitfalls of virtual teams.
Setting up a virtual team, or teams, requires a lot of planning up front. One of the main reasons is because employers very often never actually meet their prospective sub-contractor
face to face. Unlike a traditional interview where the employer has an opportunity to watch the person and their reactions to specific questions about their background and experience, the employer
seeking to bring together a virtual team has to rely on other sources to satisfactorily aid his or her decision with regard to whether or not the candidate possesses the
skills s/he is looking for. Checking credentials, interviewing previous employers and references, requesting samples of the persons work, if possible, all take on a more crucial aspect because the person
being interviewed over the phone may not be the same person that gets hired. For example, some people do much better in a face-to-face interview than in a telephone interview
and portray themselves with more confidence. A truly valuable employee could slip through an employers fingers because of a poor telephone interview. And the same is true in reverse. Therefore,
