Primary Responsibilities and Best Practices Diversity arises in a number of areas and is not limited only to race, ethnicity, nationality or other external characteristics of individuals. It is valuable in that it enables the team to operate from a broader perspective than is possible when the team is more homogeneous, and while it can be difficult to manage it also can be instrumental in producing better results. All teams need to find points on which the individual members agree (Duarte and Snyder, 2006); trust "is at the heart of the teams ability to work effectively together ... Building an early foundation of trust is essential to managing diverse members and crucial to the success and life of the virtual team." This is a primary responsibility of the leader, who must model expected and acceptable behavior and attitudes. "This means showing acceptance, consideration and concern for [team members] individual needs and feelings" (Nemiro, 2004; p. 113), and by extension expecting individual team members to behave in the same way.
