recognized that different management and communication strategies must be adapted for success. If the members of the team never meet face-to-face, communication becomes more complex and far more complicated. Many
virtual multi-cultural teams do not accomplish their objective because of the differences between and among team members. Different cultural values can lead to disaster. One example with which we are
all familiar has to do with individualism and collectivism. Some cultures, like the United States, value individualism, while other cultures, such as Asian, may place more value on collectivism. In
some cultures, people stand very very close to each other but in others, people perceive this proximal closeness as intrusive. Different cultural backgrounds can compromise the work of the
team. Effective communication processes in one country are ineffective in another. Time is perceived differently in different cultures. In one, punctuality is expected, in another, punctuality is not important. Members
in one culture expect to get down to business right away while in another, members expect to spend time socializing before business is conducted. It is easy to see how
multi-cultural work teams can easily fail and when it is a virtual team, even more problems may emerge. Virtual multi-cultural teams are successful saves the company a great
deal of money so there are cost advantages, especially in todays world. They can also be more effective than the traditional work team because they bring different ideas to the
table. Thesis Statement Working in a virtual multi-cultural work environment enhances communication with co-workers and customers and actually increases productivity compared to a traditional workplace setting.
