The nation of people chooses a path that is, in fact, sought by one or the other of the above two parties. As Jefferson himself said in a letter
to Samuel Smith in 1798, "I know my own principles to be pure and therefore am not ashamed of them. On the contrary, I wish them known and therefore
willingly express them to everyone. They are the same I have acted on from the year 1775 to this day, and are the same, I am sure, with those
of the great body of the American people" (Jordan, 1988, PG). Jefferson explained that men are naturally divided into those two parties, because men either "fear and distrust the people
and wish to draw all powers from them into the hands of the higher classes" (Jordan, 1988, PG) or there are those who "identify themselves with the people, have confidence
in them, cherish and consider them as the most honest and safe, although not the most wise depositary of the public interests" (Jordan, 1988, PG). Jeffersons Virginia was one
that saw the utility of party divisions. While differences in opinion in politics should not be allowed to disturb friendships, but man should be allowed to have differences of
opinion, much as one has differences of religion. It was of Jeffersons opinion that it would not be healthy for the public to have, however, a majority in Congress
