This philosophy is somewhat deterministic, making "self" the ultimate factor in language production, while this "self" is constructed by the forces of society, particularly from those close by. "Had I been born, said Bernard, not knowing that one word follows another I might have been, who knows, perhaps anything" (267). The groups of quotes make up the majority of Woolfs commentary on the novel, particularly the "life story." The first groups of quotes are very short, coming rapidly after one another and from each of the books six voices. The quotes become progressively longer and more interconnected. This series ends with a very long quote from Bernard, briefly recapping his life. This lends the story the feel of Bernards personal "life story." The quotes from the other characters, which reflect their personal perspectives on shared experiences, become part of the many voices of Bernard himself. Bernard is a particularly apt main character for this novel because he himself is an author, a storyteller from the very first. Bernard says at one point: "Thus my character is in part made of the stimulus which other people provide, and is not mine, as yours are" (267). It should also be noted that Neville, too, expresses this: "As he approaches I become not myself but Neville mixed with somebody -- with whome? -- with Bernard? ... How curiously one is changed by the addition, even at a distance, of a friend" (232). Woolf not only makes this point metaphorically, but also through direct statements from the six speakers. ...
