James Joyce we could term them epiphanies. Whatever we may call them they are moments when a sense of enlightenment, about one thing or another, takes place. It may be
the simple realization of the beauty of a flower. Or it may be the sudden, and chilling, realization that ones life has been, thus far, lived in vain and without
cause. These are moments when people touch on a truth, when they behold some beauty or some sense of understanding. In the following paper we examine Virginia Woolfs approach in
"Mrs. Dalloway" and then James Joyces approach in "The Dead." The paper finishes with a comparison of the two. Virginia Woolf There are two primary characters in "Mrs. Dalloway"
which offer us a perspective of moments of being. These characters are Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Warren Smith. Clarissa generally experiences her moments of being by engaging in the simplest
of acts. In her simple acts she is somewhat silent and thus can truly experience these moments of being. One of the times in which we see Clarissa have
one of these moments is when she is simply watching taxi cabs drive by. She finds them to be "absolutely absorbing" (Woolf 9). In essence, her thoughts tell us that
"what she loved was this, here, now, in front of her, the fat lady in the cab . . . Did it matter that she must inevitably cease completely .
. . or did it not become consoling to believe that somehow in the streets of London, on the ebb and flow of things, here, there, she survived" (Woolf 9).
We watch as Clarissa subtly, yet powerfully, makes these simple connections throughout the day as she watches herself and her environment. She is, in this manner, immersed in moments of
