her purpose here is to force people to admit to the earthier side of their nature. Discussion Woolfs books are surprising: simple on the surface but with depths of psychological insight that lead readers to consider events carefully. With Woolf, its easy to miss a lot. Her novel Orlando however, rather than examining a womans life as in Mrs. Dalloway, plays with the biographical form itself. Biographies are supposed to tell readers about the life of a particular person and the times in which he or she lived. They make several basic assumptions: that the person under discussion is male or female, and that they have a normal life span; that is, they are born, live and die, pretty much in that order, within the bounds of a geographical location that can be traced by various means. But Orlando, the subject of this book, doesnt fit these parameters. He/she changes sex several times, and lives in several different time periods, starting as a young noble in the 16th century-a male-and ending up as a woman in the 20th. His (her?) romp through the centuries on both sides of the gender line suggests that Woolf sees life, and the "norms" by which we live, as much more fluid and changeable than most people can accept or are comfortable with. The passage under consideration begins with the words "But what sort of passion, it may well be asked, could this be?" Leading up to this question is a scene in which the Archduchess Harriet Griselda fastens a piece of armor to Orlandos leg, and in doing so, inadvertently ignites a sudden passion in Orlando, who is a young man here.
