of possibilities present themselves in plans to conduct a rhetorical study. One particularly interesting possibility, however, is the writings of Virginia Woolf. Woolfs are particularly interesting not
only from an entertainment perspective but also from a feminist perspective. It even has relevance to todays turbulent times in that once again our world is being torn apart
by warfare and opposing ideologies. Woolfs work is thus particularly suited for a Burkean cluster criticism, an approach where key terms are identified and clusters are charted around these
key terms (Foss, 2004). Part of this analysis as well is identifying what associative terms go with what key terms, how those terms are prioritized, and the hierarchy of
the terms (Foss, 2004). Of special interest in an analysis of Woolfs work is the determination of what motives the key terms, clusters, and hierarchies reveal? In regard
to Woolfs work the research question presents itself as to whether the differences which exist today between men and women in their perceptions of their proper roles in society relate
to the inherent differences which exist between men and women in terms of their psyches. This research question can be explored both in regard to the societal events and
circumstances in which Virginia Woolf was embroiled and in regard to contemporary societal events and circumstances.
