In A Room of Ones Own, Woolf is considering the constraints
which surround women writers, and also the way in which fiction itself develops as something which is not intended to convey truth, but by its very nature will impart true
concepts despite being deliberately constructed as a series of falsehoods. She presents her argument in a fictional form, but constantly reiterates the basis of truth and fact upon which the
fictional creation rests, interspersing that which is verifiable with that which is not in the course of the narrative.
She warns the reader right from the beginning of the essay that it is the responsibility
of the reader to ascertain what is true and what is not: Lies will flow from my lips, but there may be some truth mixed up with them; it is
for you to seek out this truth and to decide whether any part of it is worth keeping (A Room of Ones Own, 4-5). She acknowledges that it may never
be possible to establish what is absolute truth, and that the only way in which she can proceed with her exploration into women and fiction is to look at her
own opinions, and the reason why she herself has come to these conclusions.
