Truth as well as increased government support for measures designed to reduce global warming, such as the gradual introduction of a ban on the sale of incandescent light bulbs in
many area, including the EU (Derbyshire, 2009). With increased awareness there is a shift in public opinion and the way that firms are expected to behave in terms of emission
and the impact that they have in the environment, for example, the Hisotry Channel is already a carbon neutral company and Marks and Spencer have out into place a strategy
with the target of becoming carbon neutral by 2101 for the UL operations (Marks and Spencer, 2010). However, there are many companies which may be argued as have both a
great deal of influence as well as having a great deal of potential to help positive impact on the influence of global warming. The Virgin Group may be seen
as a brand name that has often been associated with fair business and ethical behaviour, fighting with larger competitors and winning, as seen when Virgin Atlantic took on BA and
more recently Virgin Media took on B Sky B Television. The firm has managed to gain a reputation as being a peoples champion, aided by the very visible image of
Richard Branson. If the firm is really one that can be seen as a peoples champion with high ethics and morals we may expect to find string environmental policies, with
the firm acting as a leader and an influence on others. However, the firm is in a commercial environment and has competing needs that it may try and balance, including
the need to create a profit and meet consumer needs and desires which themselves are competing, such as the demand for quality at the same time as low prices.
