indicates the importance of tourism, not only in the creation of the GDP, but in the reliance placed on one industry to import the goods, including food and medicines, which
the island is not self sufficient. To understand the role and importance of marketing tourism on the islands we need to briefly consider the islands and then look at the
impact that tourism has in the area. The Virgin Islands consist on three main islands; St. Croix is the largest, only seven miles across at the widest point, but
it is twenty-eight miles long. This is the Islands that is totally in the Caribbean Sea. The Islands of St. Thomas and St. John, the latter being the smallest of
the three, are thirty-five miles to the east and lie between the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean (US Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, 2004). In addition to these three main
islands there are an additional fifty smaller islands in the region (US Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, 2004). The area is attractive to tourists for several reasons,
in the winter the temperature averages between seventy-seven and eighty-two degrees Fahrenheit. The territory is officially American, the currency is the dollar and the official language English (US Virgin
Islands Department of Tourism, 2004). There are many different forms of tourism seen in the area, which varies between the islands. One of the most well known forms of
