showed remarkable success in a negative economic climate. In terms of business first class offerings, Zagat actually ranked Virgin America number one ("Virgin America Waives Change Fees and Fares Differences
for Travelers Impacted By Severe Winter Weather," 2008). Travel and Leisure World also ranked it the number one airline for travel and leisure for two years straight ("Virgin America Ranks
No. 1 in Travel + Leisure Worlds Best Awards," 2009). It is hard to believe that this airline, which is by comparison in its infancy is doing so well.
While it may be true that the airline is doing well as a brand, and gaining accolades from reviewers and customers, that does not mean that the airline is
doing well financially. At least, it may not be able to stand on its own. Everyone knows that Virgin America is the brainchild of Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Airlines
and one of the richest men in the world. That Virgin America is tied to such a wealthy individual suggests that perhaps the airline is not getting off the ground
so to speak on its own. In fact, there have been allegations that the airline simply is not playing fair. For example, some question that Virgin America is owned by
U.S. Citizens, something required by federal law ("Who really owns Virgin America," 2009). In fact, in Alaska, a petition was filed to suggest that recent cash inflows as well as
