lives of mortals is what gives this poem its interest. The first six books take Aeneas -- the son of the goddess of love, Venus, and a prince of Troy,
Anchises -- on a series of adventures which begin with his escape from Troy, along with a loyal group of fugitives. Their destination is Italy, and they almost reach it.
But Juno is angrily watching Aeneas, and her fury becomes the storm that drives the adventurers off-course. Neptune, king of the sea, rises and calms the storm and rescues the
fleet, which then reaches Carthage on the coast of Africa. This is first in several examples of gods using or interfering in the lives of men. Once in Carthage,
the group is received by Dido, the queen, to whom Aeneas tells of the terrible fall of Troy. Venus intervenes and uses the mortal Dido for her own purposes. She
sends Cupid to ensure that Dido succumbs to love for Aeneas, which would then guarantee security for Aeneas and the Trojans for as long as they remain in Carthage. Queen
Dido falls does desperately in love with Aeneas -- she cant do otherwise. Her innocent love is being manipulated by deity so that she feels consumed with passion for Aeneas.
When he eventually realizes he is neglecting his duty -- Jupiter tells him he has a destiny to found Rome -- Aeneas sails away, telling Dido that he must
continue on. Poor Dido is beyond distraught. Her love and passion is uncontrollable, thanks to Venus intervention, and she cant face life without her love. When he leaves her, Dido
commits suicide. Aeneas continues on in a series of adventures as his group finally reaches Italy. The story returns to the tale of Dido and Aeneas and the gods intervention
