has become progressively more willing to present more and more graphic detail in regard to violent acts and even sexually explicit subjects in the news and other programming content. Television is not alone in this respect, of course. Newspapers, magazines, and even radio have become identified more with the depiction of violence and sexually explicit subjects than they have practically any other topic. The thesis can be presented that while admittedly this is regrettable from a variety of societal aspects, censoring this content would be an abandonment of some of the most basic rights we are guaranteed as US citizens. The intent of this paper is to examine both sides of the censorship argument while still emphasizing the point that censorship of television content, regardless of how violent or sexually explicit that content is, should not be allowed. Those that argue for censorship of television content contend that graphically violent and sexually explicit content has become the norm in the industry. They argue that this contents allure to young children is one of the prominent societal concerns of the time. They point out that such graphical violence has been demonstrated again and again to incite children to violence and to increase such adverse societal phenomenon as drug use and drinking. Those that support censorship of American television argue that the role of television in bringing graphic violence into the living rooms of every American has been associated with a number of societal ills including the increase of actual violence in our businesses, schools, and now with the recent shootings in Texas even churches. In short, many in our society are now crying out for a reduction in this media depiction and incitement of violence and sexually explicit television content and are advocating censorship ...
