100,000 people in the population, Texas drops to 16th with 450.3 violent crimes per 100,000 residents (Disaster Center, 2011; Murphy, 2011). Texas does well in terms of murders, also, with
five murders per 100,000 placing it in the 19th place (Murphy, 2011). Texas has a higher rate of violent crime than the national average (CityRating.com, 2010). Even so, there is
a trend towards fewer crimes. There was a total of 450.6 violent crimes in Texas in 2010 (Texas Crime Report, 2010). These broke out to 5 murders, 30.3 rapes, 120.7
robberies, and 284.6 aggravated assaults. It reflected an 8.3 percent decrease over 2009 (Texas Crime Report, 2010). More crimes were committed in the month of July but May was
very close. In 2010, 13 percent of all crimes were committed by persons under the age of 18. Involvement of minors in specific violent crimes was: 3 percent in murders,
11 percent in forcible rape 9 percent in robbery, and 8 percent in aggravated assault (Texas Crime Report, 2010). Victims of violent crimes were likely to know their victimizers:
34 percent of murder victims were killed by an acquaintance, 18 percent were killed by an intimate partner, 22 percent were killed by a stranger, 15 percent were killed by
a family member, and 5 percent were killed by a friend (National Crime Victims Rights Week Resource Guide, 2011)., Campus crimes continue to be a problem. Of the 1,425 violent
crimes committed, 53.2 percent were aggravated assaults, 28.8 percent were robberies, 18.1 percent were forcible rapes, and 0.2 percent were murder or manslaughter (National Crime Victims Rights Week Resource Guide,
