games have become one of the top entertainment choices pursued by our nations youth. Many view these games as a harmless outlet for active minds. Others, however, contend
that they adversely impact our youth. What emerges is two points of view, those that support video games and those that oppose them. Each has banded together even to
the point of creating special interest groups so that their points of view can be presented to the American public and policy and law makers. These public interest groups
are hardly ineffective. Indeed, they have the potential to serve as powerful vehicles of change. In fact, only their ability to counter one anothers opinions has basically kept
policies and laws regarding video games in a relative state of balance. The issues that these special interest groups emerge themselves in
really arent that complex. Most would agree that many video games are violent, even extremely violent. One particularly popular game is especially exemplary in this regard. "Mortal Kombat"
is described as combining realistic graphics with mythical settings to entice its players to seek out the:
"numerous secrets hidden within this dark and intimidating game. And in an added twist, not only did combatants spew puddles of blood from each blow, but an announcer
summoned the victor to finish his opponent off with a death move" (Greeson, 2001).
"Mortal Kombat" isnt the only game that exemplifies violent content, however. "Manhunt" is another video game that is considered by many as "graphic depiction of brutal violence" (Reuters, 2003).
