and communities. Gang violence in communities is increasing and media is now replete with the reporting on all of these events. Such violence in society is explained by various theories, but in each case, different explanations prevail. For example, domestic violence may be caused by a variety of things, including but not limited to psychological difficulties or syndromes. Gang violence may have sociological causes where several theories become involved such as social strain theory or other theories that go to deviance. In essence, the explanation for violence is not easily or concisely measured, but is rather, truly something that may be specific to particularly types. In exploring the causes of violence as well as possible solutions, it pays to look at particular types. School violence comes in a variety of forms and therefore has many causes. The Columbine incident was horrific and more indicative of a psychological problem in one or two boys than an event that is indicative of a sociological phenomenon. In schools, girls would pull each others hair while boys would practice the moves they learned from Jackie Chan films ("There must," 2002). This may be construed as normal. At the same time, the situation becomes extremely serious when school students try to express their childish reactions in a more violent way (2002). Columbine was noted, but is only one example of a much larger problem. In the past, school violence would be found in milder forms. A knife might be as bad as it would get and students would rarely get killed. Today, guns are used quite often and one cannot expect much worse than that. What can schools do to save themselves?
