This 11 page report discusses the wave of violence that has been experienced in U.S. schools in the past decade. Many different explanations have been put forward for the growing number of violent incidents at schools in the United States. Clearly, the eruption of violence in schools necessitates change in the larger objectives of education as well as that of the culture of each school. This report examines: whose problem it is; what solutions to the problem can be offered; who could be harmed by implementation of the solutions; what will be gained or lost; and, how will economic and social power shift due to implementation of new policies. Bibliography lists 13 sources.

violence in schools necessitates change in the larger objectives of education as well as that of the culture of each school. Repeatedly, social scientists, mental health experts, politicians, and
education experts earnestly assert that parents and teachers must: take more responsibility to really know their children; limit exposure to violent entertainment; support the schools in the community regardless if
ones children attends them; encourage community parenting; and, push for more gun control. Common sense solutions to a complicated problem. The problem, however, is their effectiveness or more
accurately, their lack of effectiveness. Whose Problem Is It? The argument can be made that the cause of violence at school is directly related to the lack of involvement
of parents in their childrens life. Of course, equally convincing arguments may also be made that pinpoint the reason as lack of funding for education, over-crowded classrooms, ineffective educators,
violence glorified through various forms of "entertainment," the lack of a sense of community, the loss of focus on religion, the disintegration of American society - the list is virtually
endless. Name any sociological perspective and it will have an answer as to what the root cause of school violence actually is. As a result, the problem becomes the
responsibility of as many people who have theories as to its cause. The responsibility is not just that of the parents because simple common knowledge presents the fact that
there are bad parents in society and that there always have been. Regardless of whether or not the great majority of parents of a children at any given school
are excellent, involved parents, there will be a child whose parents are oblivious to his or her needs and problems. The same goes for teachers and school administrators.
