shooter was a fourteen year old student armed with semi-automatic weapons which he had stolen. Evidently fueled by the fact that he was sometimes teased by members of the
football team, he decided to take action. He did so by taking three lives, hospitalizing five other students, and traumatizing the rest of the school and the community with
visions and sounds which will undoubtedly remain with them for the rest of their lives. Violence in our schools is a fact. It, like the rest of the
nations violence, has escalated to the point where it cannot be ignored any longer. Without swift and effective action our schools are in peril.
According to Parade Magazine "someone in the United States is murdered, raped, assaulted, or robbed every sixteen seconds" (Moyers). This fact is scary enough when one thinks
about these violent crimes as being directed at, and committed by, adults. It is even scarier when one considers that many of the victims and perpetrators of violent crimes
are children and that not only is this number growing on a daily basis but it is increasingly more common for these crimes to happen within the confines of our
school systems. One study conducted by the University of Michigan reports that nine percent of eighth graders carry a weapon to school at least once a month (Toch).
As though that statistic werent disturbing enough, nationwide it is estimated that 270,000 guns can be found in our school systems on any given school day (Toch).
