not nearly as shocked as those readers in Jacksons time who essentially were angered and confused by her story from a social perspective. As one author notes, "One can imagine
the average reader of Jacksons story protesting: But we engage in no such inhuman practices. Why are you accusing us of this?" (New Orleans Review 27). The following
paper examines Jacksons story as it involves the theme of violence and how that violence has clearly shaped our culture and still does today, all based on the notion of
tradition that follow a culture. The Lottery Many people, even today, would argue that Jacksons novel is not an accurate portrayal of the violence in our society today.
This society does not offer human sacrifices, and they generally have a reason to engage in such violence, some cause or some purpose. This is indicated by the following comment
made by one reader: "If it is simply a fictitious example of mans innate cruelty, it isnt a very good one. Man, stupid and cruel as he is, has always
had sense enough to imagine or invent a charge against the objects of his persecution: the Christian martyrs, the New England witches, the Jews and Negroes. But nobody had anything
