story would be insignificant. Violence helps us to understand the intricate nature of the human mind, and especially the mind of the unnamed narrator. In the following paper we briefly
examine the violence as an incredibly important element in the story. Violence and Fight Club The book opens with an incredibly violent scene wherein the narrator is talking
about how Tyler is going to shoot the narrator: "Tyler gets me a job as a waiter, after that Tylers pushing a gun in my mouth and saying, the first
step to eternal life is you have to die...The barrel of the gun pressed against the back of my throat, Tyler says, We really wont die" (Palahniuk). This is a
very riveting and violent scene that sets up the entire premise or theme of the novel. If we did not have this particular scene we would not be pulled, if
aggressively, into the situation that is upon us and we would not be intrigued about the history of these two individuals. In addition, through the violent scenes throughout the
story we are offered a look at the power of searching for ones identity, the tentative hold we all have upon life, and the search for some subtle meaning in
life. Violence serves as a device which awakens the characters, and the reader as well, in relationship to life and what it is about. In many ways it is a
novel which details the emotions many have when they have experienced near death experiences. These people are awakened to what is possible in life, they are given a new lease,
