problems while others take a sociological approach, suggesting that violence comes from key associations. Still other theories view specific influences as being negative and creating the violence. For example, some
see music, movies and video games as things that cause violence. Of course, one would be hard pressed to prove that a church going boy who occasionally plays a violent
video game will grab his girlfriend and go on a Mickey and Mallory joyride as seen in Natural Born Killers. At the same time, there is a case to be
made for the idea that video games proliferate violence. When violence is observed in any medium, teens become desensitized to it and they sometimes imitate the worst scenes in their
favorite films. In fact, most research in television violence does demonstrate a relationship between the exposure to aggression and subsequently exhibited aggression (Scott, 1995). The television violence debate however has
been expanded to include video games (Scott, 1995). C. Everett Koop (1982) claims that children are attracted to video games which gets them to the point so that when they
see another child being molested, they do nothing. It is presumed that in the past, before violence invaded teen turf, adolescents would have been more willing to help people in
need. Now, they shrug off horrific events. For some, this is evidence of desensitization. Violence is no longer a big deal. Some wonder why violence is included in video games
made for teens. There are firms that suggest that the games are designed for mature audiences and the packaging says so. There are even warnings on many games and age
appropriate guidelines. Yet, for the most part, parents hardly pay attention to the warnings, thinking that it is just gaming and the characters are cartoons anyway. Because the manufacturers know
