look at behavior, Anderson (1999) provides a great deal of theory and explanations about specific behaviors. Anderson excavates the landscape and comes up with what is behind the motivation
of the actor. Instead of suggesting that punitive parenting is wrong, for example, he looks at the type of parenting in question. The author distinguishes parents who lash out and
do not care about their children from those who may punish--in exactly the same manner--but have a moral message to convey (Anderson, 1999). His ideas are clearly distinct from much
literature on parenting today that accuse many of being either verbally or physically abusive. Here, Anderson suggests (1999) that parental intent and involvement is critical in distinguishing between good parenting
and abuse. The author uses the term decency to make such a distinction as decent families tone down their fighting for the neighbors (Anderson, 1999). Mainstream therapists might argue
that doing so is creating a false presence. Acting one way behind closed doors, and very differently in front of others, is an inkling that abuse is occurring. However, as
Anderson (1999) sees it, such is a sign of decency. In some way it is hard to argue with that because most people remember many strong disagreements with their first
families. Battles during toddlerhood and adolescence are common and will test the patience of any loving parent. The difference as this author sees it is the way in which situations
are handled and the character of the parents and what he calls value orientation (Anderson, 1999). If parents take the time to explain to a child why he or she
