connected to one another as the characters struggle to survive and find their identity. The following paper compares and contrasts the two stories as they relate to violence and pride.
Violence and Pride: Ellison and Morrison In Ellisons work, the first chapter which is titled Battle Royal, the reader sees how this young man is very proud of
his speech, a speech that was given by him because he was chosen as the valedictorian of his class. He is clearly an underprivileged African American and yet he is
a young man who has great dreams for himself. He is proud, and rightly so. But, in this particular chapter, wherein he is invited to give his speech at a
fancy dinner in front of many white people, he also finds that he must engage in brutal violence for the entertainment of the white people. The violence involves pitting many
young African American males against one another, blindfolded and fighting. But, even then he is consumed with the giving of his speech, indicating how his pride is deeply immersed in
a sense of innocence. "I had begun to worry about my speech again. How would it go? Would they recognize my ability? What would they give me? (Ellison 24). In
Morrisons Beloved the story is far more complex this paper is looking at the entire story rather than just one chapter from the work. In truth, there is not any
