This was a truly awful practice, since it involved physically deforming the feet to achieve an ideal of beauty. It was also undeniably sexist, since men did not have
to bind their feet, and in addition, the small feet were considered erotic (Ping, 2002). The process took years, and was absolutely filthy: A pair of perfectly bound feet
must meet seven qualifications-small, slim, pointed, arched, fragrant, soft and straight-in order to become a piece of art, an object of erotic desire. Such beauty is created, however, through
sheer violence. For about two or three years, little girls go through the inferno of torture: the flesh of her feet, which are tightly bound with layers of
bandages day and night, is slowly putrefied, her toes crushed under the soles, and the insteps arched to the degree where the toes and heels meet. Loving mothers suddenly
turn into monsters that beat their sobbing girls with sticks or brooms, forcing them to hop around to speed up the rotting of flesh and make sure the bones are
broken properly (Ping, 2002, p. 3). The practice existed in China for over 1,000 years, and spread from the imperial dynasty to the peasant classes. It is grotesque
in the extreme, but it was the norm; calling it "violence against women" is a good way to describe it but we must be careful, because we are also passing
