and video games children are all but encouraged to watch and engage in violence, if only from a perspective of "play." But, one must also stop to consider how much
influence this violence has on the children in our society. Many argue that children know it is pretend and as the all media images are not seen as real to
children. Others, however, argue that the media is numbing children to what real violence is, and what real violence is capable of. The following paper examines articles that discuss how
much influence violence in the media, through television, film, and video games, has upon the children in our society. The paper illustrates how it clearly has a negative impact on
children. Violence: Media and Children In one article we see how pediatricians are becoming involved in making recommendations for parents and children where the media is concerned. In
this article the authors note that, "For 20 years, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has expressed concerns about the amount of time children and adolescents spend watching television" (Gentile
et al., 2004; 1235). The amount of television children watch averages around 21 hours a week and when it is added to other types of media entertainment such as video
games and the computer, it rises up between 35 and 55 hours a week (Gentile et al., 2004; 1235). Through this much media exposure "It has been estimated that young
people view 10 000 acts of violence each year" (Gentile et al., 2004; 1235). Clearly with this much exposure to violence the
issue becomes a concern for many. And, this concern is well warranted as it is generally based on a great deal of research that indicates there are many different types
