in Connecticut in 1774 (James, 2009). Prison riots continue to this day. One report estimates there were at least 1,300 riots in the 20th century. The deadliest riot occurred
over a our-day period in 1971 at Attica Correctional Facility in New York. More than 1,000 prisoners held dozens of guards hostage and issued numerous demands to improve conditions (James,
2009). Reportedly, they were only allowed on shower per week and one roll of toilet paper per month. Negotiations broke down and prison officials took back the prison forcibly
using tear gas and live ammunition. The riot took the lives of 32 inmates and 11 guards. Decades later, New York State paid millions to surviving inmates and their families
who alleged they were mistreated after the riot. A 1980 uprising in New Mexico took the lives of 33 inmates, some of whom had been mutilated with blow torches.
In 1993, prisoners took control of maximum security prison in Lucasville, Ohio. While it was an 11-day siege, only one guard was killed (James, 2009). In August 2009, inmates used
shards of glass and metal scraps as weapons and went on a rampage for 11 hours at a prion in California. One dormitory was burned to the ground and 250
people were injured (James, 2009). The suspected cause racial tensions between Blacks and Hispanic inmates. More than two decades ago, California state prisons adopted a policy of separating the
Black and Hispanic populations to defuse hostilities and violence. As they have attempted to abide by a Supreme Court ruling that they must integrate the inmates, more violence has broken
