violence is painfully increasing and seems to show no signs of slowing. Women are being murdered and raped, and in many instances even young girls are suffering greatly at the
hands of rapists in Africa. It is a condition that surely must change in a supposedly enlightened world and perhaps must find change through actions of other more "civilized" nations
such as the United States. With that in mind the following paper presents an examination of just some of the conditions and events taking place in Africa as it involves
violence against women. Violence Against Women in Africa In beginning the examination of the environment in which many women in Africa find themselves we look at a story
involving a woman named Amina Lawal. Her story was told on the Oprah Winfrey show and is pleading for people to stand up to this sort of reality. "Amina Lawal,
a 31-year-old Muslim woman, was sentenced to death by stoning by a Shariah [Islamic] court at Bakori in Katsina State in northern Nigeria. Amina allegedly confessed to having had a
child while divorced" (The Oprah Winfrey Show, 2002). A woman who becomes pregnant outside of marriage provides the law "sufficient evidence for a woman to be convicted of adultery according
to this new law for Muslims, introduced in the northern states of Nigeria" (The Oprah Winfrey Show, 2002). She was to be stoned to death, first burying her up to
her neck, following the weaning of her child. While this is a frightening and inhumane reality, it is truly only one incident of many in Africa concerning the violent
treatment of women. One such reality involves Sierra Leone. "Throughout the nine year Sierra Leonean conflict there has been widespread and systematic sexual violence against women and girls including individual
