This 10 page paper considers the thesis that violence against women is predominately a symptom of a male dominated patricidal society. The paper looks at the evidence for this thesis, arguing that it can be seen as endemic in the social structures of society which are self perpetuating. The paper goes on to look at this from the hierarchy and attitudes of the judiciary and government through to the social norms in the community which are all supported by the media. else. When we think of violence as being closer to home then we start to get uncomfortable, the same country may be acceptable, the same town even, but the situation
becomes increasing difficult the closer the violence gets. When we consider violence in the same road then it becomes personal. The situation is then relevant, is it a gang or
was it an individual, how many people were involved, and where we see that the violence was against a woman or a child then we perceive it as a worse
crime. This perception may be justified, or may be in error, but or perception is one that is likely to have been conditioned since birth though many different stages form
school and education, through the media as well as cultural factors we absorb throughout our life. It is ironic that it is the same cultural factors which may be responsible
for the wide spread tolerance and acceptance that society appears to have towards violence against women. We can argue that with the attitudes of society, and the way that these
attitude effect the systems, the laws and the enforcement of these laws that have allowed the high levels of violence to continue. When we first consider the thesis that there
is an unacceptably high level of violence against women due the social structure though a patriarchal system, in the legislature and judicial system as well as society as a whole
and the control over the system by control of knowledge by the men in the countries of west. In this paper we will concentrate on North America, but it may
