awareness than ever before, there are also problems in this area. That is, domestic violence persists. Several concepts emerge from an article on this issue entitled Violence, Abuse, and Neglect
in Families and Intimate Relationships by Gelles & Cavanaugh (2005). In the article, there is discussion on a number of issues including but not limited to the prevalence of domestic
violence, elder abuse, stress, theoretical explanations, and how to protect victims of family violence. Each of these concepts are relevant in combating the problem of domestic violence. The prevalence
of domestic violence has likely increased over the years, or at least it has become more apparent. That is, in the past, when a husband beat his wife, it was
a family secret. Today, friends and family members are often aware of the signs that someone is being battered and there is nowhere to hide anymore. Yet, Gelles & Cavanaugh
(2005) claim that domestic violence was not very prevalent prior to the 1960s. Attempts have been made to quantify family violence throughout the years, but it is difficult due to
the different methodologies employed. What seems to be the case is that it is not easy to know how prevalent domestic violence is. Yet, authors claim that it is more
commonplace now than it was in the past (Gelles & Cavanaugh, 2005). Another concept discussed is elder abuse. Elder abuse is one of many types of abuse clarified in this
