shopping mall, and investigated the reactions of different people when I stood closer to them than I would have otherwise done under normal circumstances. My first attempt was to
walk closer than normal to a person walking down the mall. This task was more difficult than anticipated because, whenever I walked near to someone, the person simply adjusted
their walking pace, increasing the distance between us to something that felt more "normal." When I persisted in this maneuver, it caused the person involved to give me an annoyed
glance. Then, the person renewed her efforts to increase the distance between us. The person involved did not appear to be embarrassed, but I realized that I felt acutely embarrassed
when the person glanced at me. Clearly, even though I felt that I had adequate reason for breaking a nonverbal norm of behavior, doing so still caused me to feel
uncomfortable. Going into a store, I asked a salesgirl for help and forced myself to stand closer to her than I would normally. What I found intriguing in this is
how difficult I found it to be to intentionally violate a nonverbal standard of behavior. I found that when I did violate this norm, however, the salesgirl immediately reacted
by stepping back, as she directed me in answer to my question. Concentrating on her answer, the salesgirl did not even seem to be aware her reaction to my invading
her sense of personal space and I do not believe that her reaction registered with her on a conscious level. Rather, she appears to have reacted automatically, reestablishing the "proper"
distance between us. It was rather like participating in a totally unconscious "dance," in which I took a step forward and she took a step back. While the student
