manner in which Prospero in The Tempest and Duke Vincentio in Measure for Measure control the action of the plot appears to be manipulative; however, from an Elizabethan point of
view, these two rulers were merely exercising their divinely sanctioned authority to govern. As this suggests, both Prospero and Vincentio demonstrate god-like authority over the other characters, but this should
be seen within the cultural context of the Elizabethan era. Therefore, it is not surprising that Prospero and Vincentio share many similar qualities. However, they also differ in that Prospero
has matured as a ruler, while Vincentio is still in that process. As Measure for Measure opens, Duke Vincentio informs Angelo that he is handing over his authority to
rule while he is away from the city. In the monastery scene (I.iii), it becomes clear that Vincentio is at a loss as to how to handle the licentiousness of
the city, so he has handed power over to a strict, righteous man. However, Vincentio keeps track of how Angelo is ruling by posing as a friar. As this
demonstrates, Vincentios chief concern is for the welfare of his state. By assuming this disguise, he is able to move behind the scenes and evaluate what is going in the
city, broadening his knowledge, which, in turn, improves his skill as a ruler. While there is a logical explanation for his knowledge of the goings-on in the city, this tactic
allows Vincentio to take on the omniscient quality of a god. He knows precisely what is going on and why and who is responsible. Prospero, on the other hand,
due to the vast extent of his occult knowledge, actually is omniscient. He knows that everything about the shipwreck that opens the play and the castaways that come to his
